Nepal
Nepal introduced me to life outside of the United States. It changed the way I looked at my own life and inspired me in new ways. Since 1994, I've lived in Nepal nearly four years - including two years as a Peace Corps volunteer and one year as a Fulbright scholar. You'll find some photos here and more photos in the Nepal Project Photos section of this site. -
Pakistan
In 2000 I was invited to spend five weeks in Pakistan shooting a documentary about Sufism and Sufi musicians. The kindness of the people and the beauty of Islamic Sufi culture were astounding. I hope these photos show a side of Pakistan rarely heard on the news. -
Tibet
In 1996 I bicycled 3,000 miles - from Kathmandu to Beijing - across Tibet and China. The ten week ride was truly an "epic" adventure: exciting, exhausting, enriching. You'll find photos from the three weeks I spent riding in Tibet here. -
China
This second set of photos from my 1996 ride across Tibet and China captures just a small portion of the incredible sites and warm personalities I met in China. I guess I was surprised by the diversity and kindness I found there - things I'll never forget. -
Shamans
A Fulbright fellowship in 2001 allowed me to return to Nepal for a year of study. I focused my work on the shamanic tradition of the Kulung Rai and their traditional, Hindu, and Buddhist influences. The following images are from that research period. -
Korea
After a wonderful experience living in Nepal and biking across Tibet and China, I became fascinated by life in Asia. In 1997 and 1998 I accepted a teaching job in South Korea and spent a year working in a private English language academy. Compared to China and Japan, Korea often gets overlooked, that's a shame. It's a beautiful country, home to beautiful national parks, Buddhist temples, and great people. -
Morocco
Morocco was my first international trip outside of Asia. My wife and I spent three weeks, dividing our time between trekking in the southern Atlas mountains, relaxing on the Atlantic beaches, and traveling with friends in and around the cultural center, Fes. Great architecture, incredible olives.
